Are You A Sikh?

After this post in ShindaSingh's Blog it is important to clarify who are Sikhs.

There are obviously Amritdhari (baptised) people, but the SGPC also recognises Sahajdhari Sikhs.

These are people who follow the Sikh teachings but have not yet taken Amrit:

" 'Sahajdhari Sikh' means a person-

(i) Who professes the Sikh Religion, believes in one God, follows the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib and Ten Gurus only;

(ii) Who performs all the ceremonies according to the Sikh rites;
(iii) Who does not smoke, use tobacco, kutha (Halal Meat) in any forms;

(iv) Who does not take alcoholic in any forms drinks;
(v) Who is born in not Sikh family, but not a Patit."

First english edition of SGPC Rehat Maryada, November 1978

Anyone who commits any deeds contrary to the above is simply not a Sikh.

Sikhi is supposed to bring everyone together. All this post does is discourage and dishearten what you would probably call non-Sikhs. In the future try posting articles which encourage and give inspiration to Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike.

thank you for the comment Mandeep ji.

it was posted to inspire Sikhs to practice a stricter discipline, so that they would come under the fold of the Guru.

However, your point is valid and i apologise for any offence caused. thanks for the advice.

"(v) Who is born in not Sikh family, but not a Patit."

"Patit" means a person who being a Keshdari Sikh trims or shaves hair or who after taking Amrit commits any one or more of the 4 kurehits.

i.e
Eating meat/eggs
intoxicants of any kind, drink drugs
Cutting/bleaching/removing Hair from any part of the body
Sex with someone your not married to.

This must mean that cutting hair is the worst thing a Sikh can do.

"SGPC Rehat Maryada"

Bhaji, Rehat Maryada is made by the PANTH and Maryada of our Supreme Authority, Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

SGPC is only the "publishers" who were given the responsibility by the Sikh Rehat Maryada Committee and Sri Akal Takht Sahib to publish and ensure that the Maryada is maintained and implemented in the Gurdwaras managed by the Sikhs.

Please be careful when saying "SGPC Rehat Maryada". Better still is to call it "Panthic Rehat Maryada" or "SRM - published by SGPC"
